you can keep in contact with old friends. also if your friend is not answering their phones, you can go on and see if they're online and talk to them there. keep your profile on private.

one good thing is that you can contact your friends, and find old friends. facebook is good, too. you can tell your dad that you will keep your profile private (only your friends can see it).
